Welcome to Wear It Purple Day! This year’s theme is ‘Still Me, Still Human’.
An initiative of Wear it Purple, today focuses on promoting LGBTQIA+ youth and the issues that they face growing up, whilst also supporting them in being who they are.
Libraries and information services can do a wide range to promote themselves as a place for inclusivity and diversity, especially for LGBTQIA+ people. Some ideas include:
- Wear something purple (clothing, jewellery, badges, lanyards, hair paint, whatever you want!)
- Share how your library promotes diversity within its collections and services when talking to clients or through social media
- Hold an event to celebrate young LGBTQIA+ young people
Us here in ALIA Rainbow would love to see how libraries have celebrated Wear It Purple Day! So feel free to share what you have done through Twitter, @AliaRainbow.
Libraries enable inclusive and safe environments for all individuals from all walks of life, including LGBTQIA+ people, within our communities. This was reinforced by the ALIA Board in its Statement of support for Rainbow Storytimes on 22 June 2022.
